The Blackberry 7130e was originally marketed, back in the fourth quarter of 2004, as the premiere enterprise mobile phone-slash-PDA. While most of the other Blackberry 71xx models were technically push-email handhelds that gave the feel and functionality of a mobile phone, the 7130e went for a more complete PDA and mobile phone marriage by providing its users with a functional system that was extensively designed to give professionals the connectivity advantage right in their pocket.
Of course, that's if the Blackberry 7130e performed as well as its marketing campaign promised.
First, the physical. The Blackberry 7130e looks just like your average PDA, measuring 4.6 by 2.2 by 0.9 inches, and weighs in at 4.6 ounces. It uses a rather large keyboard that operates under Blackberry's own SureType version 2.0 technology (basically what this system did was combine a phone and QWERTY keyboard system into a single keypad), and a huge LCD display that produced a rather disappointing 65 thousand colors.
Just as one would expect from a PDA-mobile phone, the Blackberry 7130e has a huge directory of programs that are all designed to 'help the professional,' which basically means nearly all the basic office-oriented programs that one would usually need within the workplace. But the 7130e really stands out when used in tandem with a computer, especially since the mobile phone hybrid's functional Internet connection works best with a slow network (try using the Blackberry 7130e's email system with fast EV-DO systems, and you'll understand what that means). Downloading attachments with this mobile phone's system is also rather poor in terms of performance and quality, since it reduces almost all attachments to formatted text, a rather annoying system glitch.
As a mobile phone, the Blackberry 7130e functions rather well. Its reception produces clear voices, and the mouthpiece / microphone is sensitive enough to mask heavy outdoor sounds. Unfortunately, phone calls take a lot out of the Blackberry 7130e's battery, and the mobile phone lasts for a maximum of five hours' worth of talk time.
All Blackberry models lack several mobile phone features such as voice dialing options, a limited Bluetooth 2.0 system, and horrible multimedia capabilities, and the 7130e is no exception. If you're after a functional mobile phone hybrid that helps keep you in touch, this model is more than sufficient; but if you're after the multimedia experience, don't even consider getting this model
