Located in Korea, the Samsung group, a conglomerate of numerous businesses, came into existence in 1938. It was founded by Lee Byung-Chull. The Samsung group was united in 1951 as the Samsung Corporation.
Samsung Electronics was founded in 1969. It was located in Daegu, the fourth largest city in South Korea. A manufacturer of electronic appliances such as TVs, calculators, refrigerators, and air conditioners in its early years, it was merged with Samsung Semiconductor and Communications in 1988.
Samsung Electronics concentrates on five main domains: Digital Media, Telecommunication Network, Digital Appliances, Semiconductor, and LCD. These domains are responsible for producing computer devices, cellular devices, home appliances, semiconductor chips, laptops, monitors and televisions respectively.
Samsung cell phones were first produced when the Samsung Economic Research Institute was set up in 1986. The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology helped the company to expand its fields into the telecommunications services. Samsung phones were introduced as clamshell models and the first clamshell model was the A100, available in the market even today. Other models included the clamshell A300 with a dual screen, and the T100 with a color internal display.
The latest Samsung phone for music and videos is the Samsung A727, with interesting features such as video record with 1.3 MP cameras, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, cellular video, simultaneous use of voice and data, wireless Internet access, Windows live and Yahoo messenger. The Samsung SGH-T509 employs GSM technology, and it features easy-to-use camera and video capabilities, large color screen and instant messaging with built-in clients. Other models include the Samsung SGH-D900 and the Samsung SGH-t629 with Bluetooth technology and facilities such as MP3, digital player and camera.
In 2008, the Samsung SGH-U100 mobile phone that won the Guinness World Record for the world’s slimmest phone. The Samsung SGH B600, with 10 million picture elements, and the SGH-Z370 handset were credited as the world’s slimmest third generation mobile phones.
