The Dominican-American band Aventura are single-handedly popularizing the underground Dominican genre of Bachata. The band have been recording best-selling albums since 1994, selling out some of the world's most famous venues-including Madison Square Garden-in the process. A certified sensation with their fans, Aventura unfortunately remains relatively unknown in the mainstream. As the boys of Aventura have matured, they've developed a unique flavor and a suave style that is truly all their own and many of their fans have been right there with them for every step of their musical journey. As a genre, Bachata is rapidly growing in popularity. Often described as a Dominican version of the blues, the style centers around a simple dance beat and achingly romantic lyrics; usually ending with the singer not getting the girl. Aventura have brought their own innovations to the genre, and many of their biggest hits blend reggaeton, hip hop and flamenco with traditional Bachata stylings. When Aventura began playing parties around their Bronx, New York neighborhood, they originally went by the name The Teenagers, showing how young they were at the time. In a random coincidence, all four main band members of Aventura have the last name Santos; two are cousins (Anthony and Henry) and two are brothers (Max and Lenny) but the two pairs of family members are completely unrelated to each other. After several low-key releases, Aventura came up with their break-through single "Obsession" off of their We Broke the Rules album. Today, the passionate single has become essential at Latin clubs around the world. Many fans consider the band's studio album God's Promise to be their most realized musical recording to date, and the genre-bending hit album includes a guest spot from reggaeton king Don Omar, samples the Indian raga rhythms of Adnan Sami and even brings in old-school Bachata superstar Anthony Santos. All things considered, music fans who may have originally written Aventura off as a Hispanic "boy band" will be forced to reconsider.
