About Billy Ocean

Trinidad-born Billy Ocean reliably rocked the R&B charts in the mid-80's, keeping things soulful with an emotive voice and tunes that ranged from up-tempo dance hits to broken-hearted ballads. Born Leslie Charles, the future Billy Ocean moved to London at a young age. He gigged around at local clubs, perfecting his stage presence and lover-boy charm. His singles did well in the UK, "Love Really Hurts Without You" off of his self titled debut, Billy Ocean, went to #2 in England but only #22 in the US. He didn't find international fame until his 1984 album, Suddenly, and it's crossover single "Caribbean Queen" The lush synth arrangements and seductive lyrics called attention to his island origins, and his warm singing voice was universally appealing. Once Ocean connected to his fan-base, he held their attention on hits like "Suddenly" and "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry.)" His single "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" was featured in the blockbuster comedy 1985 comedy Jewel Of the Nile, starring Kathleen Turner, Danny Devito and Michael Douglas. In 1988, Billy cut his best-seller Tear Down These Walls with the lead-off hit, "Get Out Of My Dreams, And Into My Car." His last studio album was a surprising collaboration with R&B hit-man R. Kelly. R. Kelly had long been an admirer of Ocean's work and the two talented soul-boys proved to be natural colleagues in the studio; the disc, Time To Move On, ranks up there with some of Billy Ocean's smoothest.
