There will always be a market for "stoopid" novelty rock. The thing that's really amazing is that Pennsylvania's Bloodhound Gang have actually made a viable career out of it. You're not going to throw on a Bloodhound Gang album to impress a date, but you probably will laugh about it with your frat buddies. And, as paradoxical as the word "evolved" may seem in this context, Bloodhound Gang have successfully evolved their sound over the span of their 15+ year career, transferring from another white boy rap-rock combo with backward caps to a slick synth pop outfit capable of producing top-10 dance singles. But Bloodhound Gang's lyrics and musical themes haven't gone anywhere, and the boys have seldom written a lyrical fart joke they could pass up. Again, then, it's not surprising that the band formed when all band members were in high school, back in 1992. At the time, grunge was dominating American rock, and the boys have said that they wanted to lighten up the dour mood. The band took their name Bloodhound Gang from the popular 1980's educational kids' show 3-2-1 Contact. After gigging around house parties to increasing local support, the band landed a recurring gig at NYC's legendary punk club CBGB's, after which an independent record deal quickly followed. After several indie EP's, the Bloodhound Gang jumped over to the majors and inked a deal with Columbia Records, although they later moved to Geffen. Bloodhound Gang had their first taste of mainstream success with their 1996 single "Fire Water Burn." The inanely catchy single sampled its classic "the roof is on fire" chorus from an obscure hip hop single, and has since been used on several film soundtracks including Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. Bloodhound Gang really found their groove on 1999's full-length album Hooray For Boobies, with the raunchy synth-pop hit "Bad Touch." More recent singles have included "Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo" and the catchy "Unh Tiss Uhn Tiss", and the Bloodhound Gang are also a frequent guest on prankster/skater Bam Margera's MTV show.
