Christina Aguilera hit the scene as part of the great bubblegum pop wave of 1999, when her single Genie In A Bottle combined irresistible hooks with suggestive lyrics. The Grammy winning Christina quickly set out to distinguish herself from the flock of teen-pop nymphets dominating the charts at the time by playing up her Latin roots and fighting for every inch of creative control she could grab. She quickly released a critically acclaimed disc of Latin pop. This was followed by a steamy collaboration with crossover Latin pioneer Ricky Martin. A cred-boosting collaboration with Lil' Kim, P!nk and Mya came when they covered Patti LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" for Baz Luhrman's film Moulin Rouge. The sultry power-quartet updated the disco classic with modern lyrics and massive beats while frolicking in bordello-fabolous outfits. The song owned the #1 spot on the charts for five consecutive weeks. Aguilera's huge voice has always set her apart from her pop piers with it's maturity and soulful vibrato. It lead even the most critical music snobs to the consensus, "At least this one can actually sing". After several delays, Christina revealed an X-rated new image for 2002's album Stripped. She'd always shimmied the fine line between flirty and indecent. Her innuendo-filled lyrics sometimes eclipsed her raw talent. Publicity for the album included photo shoots for Rolling Stone and , where Christina (calling herself "Xtina") left very little to the reader's imagination. But like the chameleon she is, Aguilera has recently grabbed the spotlight again with a glamorous new persona and several candid interviews. She hit the Oprah Winfrey show looking like 50's Hollywood royalty and urged viewers to vote. She did a Marilyn Monroe inspired Mercedes Benz ad campaign. She recorded and executive produced an ambitious double disc album titled Back to Basics, that pays tribute to 1930's blues, soul and big-band with a thoroughly modern sensibility.
