Christina Aguilera hit the scene as part of the great bubblegum pop wave of 1999, when her single Genie In A Bottle combined irresistible hooks with suggestive lyrics. The Grammy winning Christina quickly set out to distinguish herself from the flock of teen-pop nymphets dominating the charts at the time by playing up her Latin roots and fighting for every inch of creative control she could grab. She recorded and executive produced an ambitious double disc album titled Back to Basics, that pays tribute to 1930's blues, soul and big-band with a thoroughly modern sensibility.
