In all of her album photos soft-voiced pop singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat comes across as a relaxed Malibu princess, with a melody on her lips and a flower in her hair. Colbie's songs live up to her record covers, and a typical Caillat track is a fresh, chilled out slice of acoustic pop. Colbie Caillat is just one of a new generation of Malibu music royalty, and the young songstress is convincing proof that music really can be in the blood. In Caillat's case, she may get some of her talent from her producer father, who worked on Fleetwood Mac's classic Rumours and Tusk albums. Colbie Caillat might have inherited her father's industry insider savvy too, since the singer first caught the attention of music fans with her MySpace page. At one point, Colbie Caillat was the no.1 unsigned solo singer on MySpace, all on the strength of her self-recorded, breezy folk-pop MP3's. Like other recent "out-of-nowhere" recording stars, Colbie Caillat's infectious single "Bubbly" was the iTunes music store's featured free "single of the week", landing her on countless iPod playlists. Colbie Caillat is often held up by confused music industry insiders as a perfect example of how young artists can use new media to get music out there without a record label. However, after she'd caught the attention of music fans, Colbie did sign with Universal Records, and her 2007 debut disc Coco was a perfect summer-pop gem. Colbie channels her mellow hometown of Malibu, and you can totally hear her music playing at a low-key luau beach party. Colbie strums her guitar and adds occasional piano flourishes, as well as bringing in father Ken Caillat, whose simple production does justice to his daughter's relaxed songwriting style. However, album tracks like "Midnight Bottle" and "Battle" show the Caillat isn't afraid to tackle mature and difficult topics, despite her sunny disposition. Overall, Colbie Caillat's debut disc is a treat for music fans and promises exciting things from the young talent.
