About Cyndi Lauper

Along with a handful of other familiar faces, Cyndi Lauper has been officially canonized as one of the pop icons of the 1980's. The first wave of MTV brought telegenic popstars from all over the country, and Cyndi Lauper's funky style and perky lips got her armies of teenage imitators. Born in suburban New York, Cyndi dropped out of school to try her luck at the music game. Her first leads proved dead ends, and she found herself singing covers around New York's bar band scene and working at the famous hipster vintage clothing store Screaming Mimi's in the East Village, a job she'd later credit with influencing her eclectic style. Like a fairytale princess, Cyndi Lauper was plucked from a beer stained dive bar and shot to stardom. In 1983, she released her major label debut, She's So Unusual. Her dancey, synthesizer drenched singles were pure bubblegum bliss and totally impossible to resist-"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was a slam dunk classic piece of 80's New Wave and Cyndi Lauper's pop-punk style was suddenly everywhere. She followed it up with the catchy ballad "Time After Time" and raised eyebrows with the frisky, double-entendre filled "She Bops." Cyndi Lauper was the first female recording artist in history to score five consecutive Billboard top-5 hits off one album. Cyndi Lauper contributed vocals to the Live Aid classic "We Are the World" in 1985 and scored another chart hit with her theme to the cult classic kids movie The Goonies, "The Goonies R Good Enough."
