Daft Punk have a bigger collection of synthesizers than you. The French duo also have a robot fetish and a string of catchy electronic hit singles that light it up on the dance floor at a rave, a mainstream club or even a wedding reception. Their live shows are legendary but they keep their identity a closely guarded secret, performing in tricked out robot costumes or other masks. After a brief and ill-fated attempt at indie rock, they surrendered to their passion for machines and recorded their 1997 full-length debut, Homework. Their breakthrough single "Around the World" was a frothy mix of house, acid and retro electro sound effects and the striking video was directed by surrealist visionary Michel Gondry. Homework was as appealing to indie rock fans as it was to club kids and the band's follow-up, 2001's Discovery, saw them getting even catchier. The anthemic club hit "One More Time" is the best future-disco single never recorded in the 70's and the schizophrenic "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" sounds like Kraftwerk on a cocktail of helium and acid. Daft Punk went to space-anime guru Leiji Matsumoto to produce their full-length animated feature Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem which chronicled the adventures of Daft Punk's robotic alter-egos as they use their electro-disco-funk to help save a planet of blue skinned humanoids from destruction. The disc had an accompanying soundtrack album and solidified their innovative reputation with their fans. In 2005, Daft Punk released Human After All and the funky singles "Robot Rock" and "Technologic."
