David Cook, with his boyish good looks and awl-shucks smile stands out among past American Idol contestants who are more often noted for big voices and Pop sensibilities. Cook, an electric guitar player since age 2, is the Season 7 winner of the popular American television show. Cook, an All-American born in Houston, Texas, grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri. At Blue Springs South High School, he not only performed in musicals but was also an avid baseball player. He attended the University of Central Missouri on a theater scholarship but abandoned theater after two semesters and ultimately graduated in 2006 with a degree in Graphic Design. After college, David relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma to pursue his music dreams while tending bar in neighborhood speakeasies. On a whim, David accompanied his younger brother to the Omaha stop of the American Idol auditions where producers encouraged him to audition as well. Although his brother didn't make the Hollywood round, David made it through and continued to impress the judges with his Alt-Rock edge and willingness to take risks on song choices and arrangements. David won the 2008 season by a huge margin of 12 million votes over runner-up, former Star Search 2 Junior Vocalist Champ, David Archuleta. Although both contestants were awarded a Ford Escape Hybrid, David Cook also received a recording contract with Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment and Sony BMG.
