Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 13 in the year 1974, Deborah Cox is a popular Canadian singer most active in the music world from 1995 to present. She is the first black R&B star from Canada and is renowned in the music industry for her spectacular combination of a superb voice, beauty and actual song writing talent. She was raised by her Guyanese parents, her mother Jeannette and her step father Ernie. Cox's mother, a union activist and city worker, was her musical inspiration from the beginning. Her mother introduced her to all types of music, from jazz to calypso and blues from her native Guyana. At the age of 11 she won a Tiny Tot Talent contest presented by a local television show. She started singing commercial jingles at the age of 12 years for TV commercials with the guidance of her mother. She also performed in nightclubs. She enrolled with the Claude Watson School for the Arts where she learned classical music and expanded her skills in Jazz. Deborah's association with Lascelles Stephens, her high school friend, song writer, bassist and producer was a turning point in her personal and professional life. Lascelles was engaged in producing recordings with a rapper Maestro. Soon both collaborated on songs and Deborah wrote songs with the help of Lacelles. Her joint venture with Lascelles Stephens ended up in a 4-song demo that soared high on record lists. Later, Cox signed with Artista Records and toured with the Arista artist Celine Dion as a back-up vocalist. In 1995 she released her self-titled album and gained recognition throughout the music industry. This album along with the singles "Sentimental," "Where Do We Go From Here," "Who Do U Love" and "The Sound Of My Tears" won her a Gold RIAA certification and sold more than 50,000 copies. The album "One Wish" (1998) along with singles "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here," "Things Just Ain't The Same" and "It's Over Now" won her platinum certification. The Morning After (2002), Remixed (2003), and Ultimate Deborah Cox (2004) are her other albums. "Destination Moon" is her latest album and was released in June 2007 to critical acclaim. Deborah Cox married Lascelles Stephens in April 1998 and has two children.
