Synthpop duo Annie Lennox and David Stewart, best known as the intelligent musical combo The Eurhythmics, have been crafting their artful, electronic pop songs for over two decades. After playing in the critically panned UK outfit The Tourists, the two discovered a kindred interest in experimental music and cutting edge recording techniques and broke off to do their own thing, involving guest musicians as they saw fit. Their first effort, In the Garden, has gone on to be a fan fave but was released with little fanfare-it's a collection of lovelorn electro pop and the modest single was "Love Is A Stranger." By this time, Annie and David had gone into debt to finance a small studio in rural Chalk Farm, England. Having their own studio gave them complete artistic control and experimental freedom but pressure was mounting to achieve at least moderate financial success. In 1983 they hit a grand slam with the single and album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This.) With it's ominous, pulsing synth intro and ambiguous lyrics, the track was irresistible enough on it's own but the video featured a newly androgynous Annie Lennox with a flaming red crew cut and a well-tailored man's suit. MTV viewers found their sexuality questioned and they kind of liked it. The Eurhythmics went on to release several sophisticated pop hits including the sprawling ballad "Here Comes the Rain Again" and "Who's the Girl?" Lennox proved she was more than just the dominatrix, developing a series of video "characters" for herself. Annie Lennox had solo hits with her album Diva and the haunting love song "Walking On Broken Glass," but The Eurhythmics are still a going musical concern, recording new songs and touring to critical acclaim.
