The big-voiced Faith Evans has made a name for herself as the go-to R&B voice for hip hop hooks and collaborations. The glamorous Evans is capable of belting out a chorus or lowering her voice to a breathy purr, as the situation demands. Faith escaped a troubled childhood-her father walked out on her 18 year old mother, and she moved from Florida to New Jersey to live with family. Her grandmother was a devout Christian and Faith discovered her talent for singing in the church choir. To this day, she often give thanks to her faith for helping her though difficult times and keeping her grounded now that she's found success. Evans won a full scholarship to Fordham University but dropped out after a year to pursue music. She had her first child at age 19 with musician Kiyamma Griffin, who introduced her to his friend Sean "Puffy" Combs and got her work as a session singer. She worked with artists like Usher, Mary J. Blige and The Notorious BIG. (she was featured on the remix of his 1994 hit "One More Chance.") Her debut solo album, Faith, featured the hits "You Used to Love Me," "Soon As I Get Home" and "Ain't Nobody." Notorious B.I.G. had fallen hard for Faith, and they were married. She began using her full name, Faith Evans, to try and distinguish her music career from that of her famous husband. The couple had one song together before Biggie's murder in after the Soul Train Awards in 1997. Faith Evans suffered deep depression following Biggie's death, but went on to record her classic albums Keep the Faith and Faithfully.
