The stunning Nashville queen Faith Hill has it all-the looks, the pipes, the man and the hits. Not bad for a little girl from Star, Mississippi. After dropping out of college, Faith followed in the trail of thousands and moved to Nashville to seek her fortune. She spent time touring with a Southern Gospel group, The Steeles, which helped her develop a stage presence and her soaring vocal chops. Her 1993 debut album, Take Me As I Am, stirred up ripples in the scene with its lead-off single, the rocking "Wild One." She followed it up with a cover of the anguished Erma Franklin cover "Piece of My Heart." On the strength of her first two records, she scored a tour with hunky superstar Tim McGraw. The two hit it off, and he proposed to her in his dressing trailer mid-tour-but he had to run on stage, and she accepted by writing her answer in magic marker on his mirror. Things just got better from there. In 1998 she released the slickly produced Faith, full of up-tempo rockers and tender love ballads. "This Kiss" was #1 on the country charts and made it up to #7 on the pop charts. She became a certified crossover phenomenon with her follow-up LP and single, Breathe. "Breathe" really showcased Hill's incredible vocal range, and the romantic lyrics proved to hold universal appeal. She had a slight misstep with the overdone Cry, which started strong but quickly fell off, largely due to critical consensus that it was too pop. To answer the critics, Faith Hill cut the traditional country album Fireflies, full of acoustic production values and a duet with hubby Tim McGraw, "Like We Never Loved At All."
