With their scruffy good looks and sweet hooks, The Goo Goo Dolls have successfully made the transition from grunge-pop darlings to mainstream chart rockers. Their sound is so smooth and sunny that it's difficult to imagine that this band languished in the indie rock ghetto for years. Yes, before The Goo Goo Dolls hit the Top 40 they were Buffalo, New York's best kept secret. Lead vocalist and guitarist John Rzeznik can sell the romantic bad boy image as well as anyone in rock, and the band's intelligently emotional lyricism cuts through the empty bravado of other modern rock bands. Oddly enough, it took Nicolas Cage as a lovelorn angel to get The Goo Goo Dolls off of the college radio circuit. The band's breakout single "Iris" was featured on the soundtrack to the hit 1997 movie City of Angels. "Iris" and the accompanying video earned The Goo Goo Dolls instant recognition. It may surprise fans who were introduced to The Goo Goo Doll's over the radio, but the group of romantics actually got their start under the name The Sex Maggots back in the mid-80's. Club owners were reluctant to book a group with an unprintable name, so they quickly changed it to The Goo Goo Dolls, after a toy advertised in True Detective magazine. The Doll's sound on their earlier records leans heavily towards sloppy, loose rock and, in the early days, Rzeznik traded mumbled vocals with bassist Robby Takac. The Goo Goo Doll's quickly became the go-to band for soundtrack hits, and they had songs in both Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare ("I'm Awake Now") and Pauly Shore's Son In Law ("We Are Normal", co-written with The Replacements' Paul Westerberg.) On 1995's A Boy Named Goo, The Goo Goo Dolls' began finding their commercial feet, and the polished single "Name" brought them unprecedented success. 1998's Dizzy Up the Girl delivered on the promise of "Name", and singles like "Slide" and "Black Balloon" cemented The Goo Goo Dolls' reputation as kings of romantic rock.
