Five-piece Oklahoma rock band Hinder's debut CD, Extreme Behavior, gives fans just that, starting with the red lingerie-clad bust and pouting lips on the album cover and carrying through all the disc's ten hard-edged tracks. What more could you want from a band with great hair and two guitars? These photogenic bad boys cover the dirty bases, with lyrics about getting high ("Get Stoned"), anonymous sex ("Room 21") and booze, booze, booze. The liner notes thank Belvedere vodka, Crown Royal, Jagermeister and tequila, the latter presumably of any brand. But savvy music fans are led to question, if the boys are really filled up with that much of the hard stuff, how can they crank out such solid hard rock tunes? Hinder's lead singer Austin Winkler delivers his head-banging anthems in a nuanced, surly rasp while lead guitarist Joe Garvey lays down some classic solo riffs. But it's their surprisingly tender revival of the power ballad tradition ("Lips Of An Angel") that's found them national fame. The soaring track is perfect for stumbling out into the streets after a rough party and seeing the sunrise, the way the best modern rock power ballads are. And it finds Winkler struggling with the eternal dilemma, stick with his passed out gf, or follow a drunken angel in torn fishnets off to trouble and heartache? Critics compare them to a naughtier Nickelback or Buckcherry in jeans instead of leather, but hopefully their follow-up will find them doing a little more to build their own identity. Like any good rockers, they tour constantly so quick, catch Hinder before their livers give out!
