One of the hottest bands of the eighties, Huey Lewis and the News are known for hits such as "The Power of Love," "Hip to be Square," and "If This is It." Guitars, keyboards, drums, harmonicas, horns and harmonic vocals combined to produce the unique sound that gave rise to the band's popularity. Since Huey Lewis and the News formed in 1979, the band has gone through both name and member changes. With what began as Huey Lewis and the American Express, the group would later be known as Huey Lewis and the News, and included several members. Their music was not an instant success, but with extensive touring and plenty of airtime on MTV, the News became popular and enjoyed 35 weeks on the Billboard charts. Although band members have changed over the years, Huey Lewis and the News continues to tour, playing their hits from the eighties at smaller venues across the country. Their most recent album, Live at 25, was recorded at a live show in December 2004 and was released in 2005. The band has performed together as recently as August 2007; the performance was especially memorable as Mario Cippollina, the original bassist, took the stage to play, creating an emotional reunion with his former bandmates. There has also been talk of a new album, although no release date has been set. In February 2007, Huey Lewis stated in an interview that new songs had indeed been written, but no definite recording plans had been put into place. He also mused that he was uncertain as to how the music would sell, due to the changes in the music industry over the last two decades. But despite what Huey Lewis says of future record sales, fans are eager to hear the new music from Huey Lewis and the News.
