Inner Circle is a Jamaican band formed in 1968 by Ian and Roger Lewis; they started out as a mostly cover band, recording their own versions of many Bob Marley songs plus a few soul and R&B tracks. They are primarily known for their song "Bad Boys", recorded in 1989 and currently used for the Fox series COPS ? "Bad boys bad boys, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when they come for you?". The song is a hit with every generation from 89 to now, and what's more it is one of those elusive reggae hits that brings a new perspective to many music fans. The band has released an astonishing twenty-two records since 1974, all the way up until 2004 ? although the group broke up after the death of frontman Jacob Miller in 1980, they re-established themselves with the singer Calton Coffie in 1986 with the release of Black Roses. A handful of singles have done effectively little to boost the popularity of Inner Circle over the years, however the track "Bad Boys", released in 1993, and "Sweat (A La La La La Long)" released in the same year from the record Bad Boys managed to chart at no. 8 and no. 16 respectively. The subsequent singles "Rock With You", "Games People Play" and "Not About Romance" managed to chart within the US top 100 but only just barely at a respective no. 98, no. 84 and no. 92. The band continues to record and tour with their own brand of reggae beats, producing music that is very rooted in the traditional recordings of Bob Marley and the like, however also reaching the pop world with its strong attitude. Inner Circle, despite the low chart positions of their singles and albums, does manage to create the kind of music that has pop potential; this was true for "Bad Boys" and if only heard through the right ears, it could be true for their later recordings.
