Joan Osborne is an alternative/rock singer and songwriter who is most well known for her hit single "One of Us." The song was one from her first major label record Relish, released in 1995; the record was the first of 8 albums that Osborne has released to date. Early Recordings (1996), Righteous Love (2000), How Sweet It Is (2002), One of Us (2005), Christmas Means Love (2005), Pretty Little Stranger (2006) and Breakfast in Bed (2007) have been well-received and critiqued by Osborne's fans and have cemented her status as an alternative rock musician following the amazing success of her original single. Although it might appear to many that she has faded from the spotlight, and indeed she has in relation to her first record, Joan Osborne has continued a lucrative music career that was kicked off with one song that all of us remember and love. Osborne is a very soulful singer, and she puts a great deal of emotion into her songs when she sings about love, life and spirituality. Hers is a brand of music best appreciated by women, however she does have her fair share of the male audience who understand her depth as a songwriter and her ability to perform well onstage. Osborne is a very independent musician who, while working well with her band and acknowledging their part in her success, can hold her own when it is just her and a guitar in the spotlight. She has toured and recorded with other artists in the same field as herself, including Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, and has appeared in Lilith Fair. The success of her latest record has yet to be seen but if the ratings of her previous albums are anything to go by then this star has nothing to worry about.
