Few artists have earned the title of chameleon quite as well as Justin Timberlake. It's hard to imagine the suave, dangerous Timberlake on 2006's Futuresex/Lovesounds as part of the wholesome, post-Mickey Mouse Club late-90's teen pop wave. Michael Jackson comparisons are not unfounded. Even during his 'N Sync days, it became quickly apparent to fans that Timberlake had something special. His sweet falsetto, piercing blue eyes and funky-stiff dance moves pushed him into the spotlight during 'N Sync's five year reign of bubblegum chart dominance. When he finally made his long-term relationship with Britney Spears public amid a tempest of tabloid rumors, the photogenic couple held court as pop royalty, as iconic as Sid and Nancy or Johnny Cash and June Carter. Publicizing their strong Christian values, the couple were media darlings. It almost seems like fate that their relationship would end right as the teen pop bubble broke. When Justin released his post-'N Sync solo debut in 2002, fans were pleasantly surprised to see a more mature, sexier Timberlake. Many of the album's hit tracks allude heavily to the breakup, giving Timberlake an air of righteous, wounded vulnerability that his fans found irresistible. For his debut, Timberlake distanced himself from his boy band days by going to edgier hip-hop producers like Timbaland and The Neptunes, who put together funky beats for his top-10 hits "Rock Your Body" and "Cry Me A River." The latter track was accompanied by a downright creepy video of Timberlake voyeuristically stalking a Britney look-alike. In 2004 Timberlake made huge headlines and killed off any lingering vestiges of his squeaky clean image after finding himself front and center in one of the decade's biggest media scandals, Janet Jackson's Super Bowl XXXVIII wardrobe malfunction. It was the most Tivo'd boob in history and there was Justin, doing the exposing. Now he's back and hotter than ever with his sizzling sophomore disc.
