The smoky-eyed Irish singer Kate Nash is one of several modern artists attempting to bring an off-beat, indie sensibility to the mainstream pop charts. Her voice is pretty stunning but it's the scope of her lyrics that has really endeared Kate Nash to her fans; the young songstress can convey a whole movie's worth of story-a romantic comedy or a tense psychodrama-in a simple three-minute song. And, if album sales are any indication, the time for this genre-bending narrative style could be now. Like many others in this new wave of young talent, Kate Nash actually got her big break after posting her music on her MySpace page. Somehow, a couple of Kate's live recordings made their way to the ears of the caustic pop sensation Lily Allen, who was smitten with Kate's style. Allen listed Kate Nash as one of her top eight friends, meaning that any fans viewing Lily Allen's profile had the chance to hear Kate's music. Fortunately, the artist's respective music, while different, appeals to the same fan-base, and Kate Nash experienced a huge boost in popularity. Many critics point out that Kate and Lily both sing in the same middle class London accent, although their musical styles are actually pretty different. Interestingly, Kate Nash almost had no music career at all. Originally, the young Nash's passion was acting. She auditioned for the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theater School, but was rejected. Only days after her rejection, Kate Nash slipped and injured herself on a staircase. With lots of time to think during her recovery, Kate began writing songs instead. With Lily Allen's patronage, Nash scored a deal with the indie label Moshi Moshi, based solely on the strength of her live MySpace tracks. Kate Nash's introspective track "Caroline's A Victim" was a solid preview of Kate Nash's overall style, which throws catchy but incisive lyrics over digital DIY rock beats. Lily Allen obviously takes her complex production style from American hip hop, but Kate Nash seems to favor simple, quirky basement production and fans are eagerly awaiting her next, big-budget release.
