Kurupt is the stage name of Ricardo Emmanuel Brown, a Philadelphian gangsta rapper who records as a part of Tha Dogg Pound along with Snoop Dogg and Daz Dillinger. He is sometimes known as Young Gotti or The Kingpin. After leaving Death Row Records, Kurupt signed with A&M and went on to record seven full length studio albums: Kuruption! (1998), Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha (1999), Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey (2001), Originals (2004), Against Tha Grain (2005), Same Day, Different S--t (2006) and Against The Grain: Tha EP (2007). His debut solo record charted at no. 8 with the singles "We Can Freak It," "Ask Yourself A Question" and "C-Walk". The following albums fared poorly in comparison, with the 1999 follow-up reaching only no. 31.nnLike the many other rappers he has worked with, Kurupt is a hard-edged performer whose lyrical content is often up for debate but whose fans love the dedication he shows to his gansta-rap roots. His music is rough at times, always penetrating and despite all the sharp corners, often catchy if given a chance! He has continued to record with Tha Dogg Pound throughout his solo career and this has arguably given him the opportunity to explore his own brand of music in the knowledge that it would need to be set apart from his collaborative performances. The result is gangsta rap that is certainly related to that of artists like Snoop Dogg but that offers its own brand of truth and style.nnKurupt is affiliated with the Crips, a gang known for its ritual the "C-walk"; the rapper wrote a song of the same title and recorded it with two of the gang members. His music and ideals remain the subject of hot debate and criticism, however he remains true to his opinions and loyal to those he calls his friends.
