Romantic rockers Maroon 5 know how to take relationships-good relationships and bad relationships-and turn them into catchy pop. Nearly ever track on their smash debut Songs About Jane chronicles some aspect of singer Adam Levine's split from his girlfriend, a lady not surprisingly named Jane. But whereas a less mature band would fill a breakup album with bitter angst and recrimination, Maroon 5 take listeners on a subtle, nuanced exploration of all the emotions, sweet and sour, the come along with loving and leaving someone. Songs About Jane is also notable for taking 26 months since its release to hit the Billboard Top 10-the longest gap in Billboard history. Which just goes to show, once you've heard Maroon 5's hooky, lovelorn guitar pop it grows on you. It took the band awhile to get their lineup straight too-Levine and keyboardist Jesse Carmichael were both in the much-buzzed alternative band Kara's Flowers. Touring with Kara's Flowers gave the musicians an opportunity to explore R&B music and hip hop and Levine cites those sounds as influences in Maroon 5's soulful vocals and pop sensibility. Their debut single, "Harder To Breathe" garnered steady airplay in the band's local California market and gradually brought them to national attention. Their second single, the soaring "This Love," was an MTV hit. The band has since released a pair of well-received live acoustic albums and contributed the track "Woman" to the Spider Man 2 soundtrack. Unfortunately, drummer Ryan Dusick had to leave the band for medical reasons after rigorous touring and was replaced by Matt Flynn. Maroon 5 are currently working on their second studio album, set for release in early 2007.
