Obie Trice: Real name, no gimmicks. This is how Detroit rapper Obie Trice was first introduced to the world on Eminem's song "Without Me." Eminem signed Trice to Shady Records after meeting him through a D12 member and decided to help him cut his first record. Two albums have been released to date: Cheers (2003) and Second Round's on Me (2006). In 2008, a third album will be released entitled Bottom's Up.
Obie Trice prides himself on being real, playing no tricks about who he is, where he came from, or about his past for the sake of an image and subsequent record sales. He has been shot while driving in Detroit and actually still has the bullet in his head because doctors are uncertain whether an operation is less risky than leaving it in. He performed as one of Detroit's underground rappers for years; in fact, since the age of 11, and built up a small local fan base with songs such as "Respect", "My Club", "Dope Jobs Homeless" and "The Well Known Asshole." After signing with Shady Records, he has enjoyed commercial success and has collaborated with many new colleagues in the circuit.
The rapper is very concerned with the violence in his city, particularly black on black violence, and has spoken out against this kind of behavior both in person and in his music. His songs strive to reveal the life of the inner city underworld to a large audience and a larger part of the world so that people will really know what goes on and maybe try to make a change for the better. His zeal for being himself and just recording good and meaningful music sets him apart from many other rappers and he is able to perform both with a hard edge to the tracks or with a pop/joke mentality that is so well known on his current record label.
