About Rod Stewart

Do ya think he's sexy? Fans familiar only with Rod Stewart irresistible radio hit are missing out on one of the longest and most diverse careers in rock n' roll. Stewart, who had always been musically inclined, started out floating around London's swinging mod scene in the 1960's. He had cool hair and a natural inclination for folksy blues and he would often busk subways and street corners for drinking money. While engaged in just that he was recruited into a local garage band, The Hoochie Coochie Men. The scene was loose, and he eventually found himself playing in straight-up rock band The Faces with guitar god Jeff Beck. In 1969, Rod Stewart released his first solo effort, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down. Stewart throaty, gentle voice was perfect for his lyrical tales from the English working class. In 1971 he released his classic Every Picture Tells A Story and the melancholy ballad "Maggie May," a classic tale of lost innocence, is an enduring hit. Every Picture Tells A Story, with its classical mandolin arrangements and story-driven tunes, is considered by fans to be the pinnacle of Stewart's folk years. For his second act, Stewart bought a pair of leather pants and went 393. In 1977 he released A Night On the Town, full of muscular guitar rockers like "Hot Legs" and the disco rave-up "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." Stewart's folk fans were disappointed in this new direction, but his albums had never sold better. These days, the mature Stewart has been concentrating on recording a collection of American popular standards. The rocker's voice has aged surprisingly well, and Rod Stewart's classy "Great American Songbook" albums consistently play on the charts.
