Salt-n-Pepa was a female hip hop trio that plunged onto the scene in 1986 and dominated pop music throughout the early 1990's. Members Cheryl James and Sandra Denton were Salt and Pepa, respectively, and Deidra Roper (AKA DJ Spinderella) helped to hold the group together. The group released five albums from 1986 to 1997 but hit their peak with the 1993 release of Very Necessary. The 1997 record failed to chart in the top 10 or even the top 20, however, this was to be expected given the length of time between the albums. By the later 1990's pop music and hip hop was changing. Salt-n-Pepa delivered a sound that helped to define late 80's and early 90's pop music: they took hip hop to a new level, not only because they comprised an all-female group, but because they brought hip hop to the pop stage. Kids all over the country and in other parts of the world were singing along to the single "Push It", a song destined to be their defining track. The music was very pop-oriented, but also very hip hop, and it offered the youth of America something new, something culturally different, and something altogether more fun than other artists on offer. Salt-n-Pepa embodied the contemporary pop trend perfectly while bringing hip hop as an entire genre more into the spotlight than it had ever been before. The group can partially be credited for the subsequent success of groups like Destiny's Child, TLC and even modern hip hop artists, male or female. Following the decline of Salt-n-Pepa's popularity, it is clear to see what kind of impact the group had on modern music, especially in the latter years of the 1990's.
