It's tough to guess after hearing the classic country twang in Shania Twain's voice that the Nashville pop queen was actually born in Vancouver. But the stunning Canadian country phenomenon has transcended her Northern roots and she can belt out a classic Southern stomp with the best of them. And Shania's third album, 1997's Come On Over, is currently the best selling album by a female recording artist. It's been certified diamond and it spawned a parade of hit singles that continue to rock jukeboxes around the world. But things haven't always been easy for Shania-she was confused up by her parents' early divorce. She went to live with her mother who quickly remarried, but neither brought in enough money to feed the family and they sent the naturally gifted Shania out to sing in local bars for tips. Shania has since candidly discussed her mother's depression at this time and become an advocate to raise awareness of clinical depression. Shania released a couple traditional Nashville pop albums-slick affairs that were hits on country music stations but didn't get out of the square dance ghetto. But with Come On Over, Shania established herself as a genuine crossover star. Anthems like the title track and "You're Still the One" were a perfect mix of hot licks and sweet sentiment while rave-ups like "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" carried on a classic Nashville tradition of strong women singing about just how strong they are. These days, Shania Twain has declared herself semi-retired from public life and lives in New Zealand raising sheep.
