About Take That

Only savvy pop anglophiles know about the English mega-band Take That in America, but throughout the rest of the world the boy-band easily dwarfs acts like The Backstreet Boys or even New Kids On the Block in terms of popularity and records sales. Formed in 1990 by arch music industry player Nigel Martin Smith, Take That would go on to sell over 19 million records, earning them the title of "most successful British bands since The Beatles." The group of golden voiced glossy magazine boys included ex child model Mark Owen, aspiring musician Gary Barlow, DJ and model Howard Donald, dancer Jason Orange and youngster Robbie Williams. In their own words, the young boys (only Howard was 21 when the band formed and Robbie was only 16) were all shocked by their meteoric rise to success, and none of them could have predicted that Take That would be as eagerly embraced by grandmas and bartenders as they were by their target teenybopper audience. Like many guilty pleasure pop bands, Take That's break-through single was actually a cover song; "It Only Takes A Minute" by the 1970's band Tavares. The single made it to no.7 and also got the Take That boys crucial video exposure. Once girls got a peak at the clean cut quintet with their killer dance moves and "street" outfits, the ante was upped. Subsequent hits included Donna Summer's "Could It Be Magic", "A Million Love Songs" and "I Found Heaven." In 1993, Take That released their wildly successful album of original material, Everything Changes. The album presented a slightly older, harder incarnation of Take That and spawned an army of hit singles including "Relight My Fire", "Pray", "Everything Changes" and "Love Ain't Here Anymore." Robbie Williams left the band in 1995, after the future solo star was seduced by Oasis' bad boy ways at the Glastonbury Festival. Take That broke up shortly after Robbie's departure, and the members went on to pursue solo careers with varying degrees of success. In 2006, Take That reunited minus Robbie, and they've picked up where they left off with the come-back singles "Patience" and "Shine."
