The Waitresses were an American New Wave band active in the 1980's. Based in Kent, Ohio, there were eight band members throughout The Waitresses' entire career, although not all were involved at the same time. They were responsible for the hit songs "I Know What Boys Like" and "Christmas Wrapping", covered by Vitamin C and Save Ferris respectively. The latter was redone by a punk band because the song has a decidedly punk edge and continues to be thought of as such. It is a very popular recording with punk fans and artists all over the world and is often found in the record collections of people who otherwise do not listen to the band. Regardless of the Christmas song, The Waitresses were primarily a new wave band and, like many of their kind during the 1980's, they embodied a vibe that was related to original punk, influenced modern punk, and yet was a genre all its own. The band recorded four albums throughout the course of the early 1980's and then fell off the radar until the compilation record The Best of The Waitresses in 1990; this record was remastered in 2003. The band, despite its demise, still has a loyal and dedicated fan base that is comprised largely of music fans who simply love to witness the transition of different types of music into modern trends. It can be said that lead vocalist Patty Donahue, guitarist Chris Butler, sax and reed player Mars Williams, drummer Billy Ficca, keyboardist Dan Klayman, bassists Tracy Wormworth and David Hofstra and background vocalist Ariel Warner are responsible, along with other 80's artists in this genre, for the continuing success of the modern punk and indie scenes. Patty Donahue is certainly responsible for the unique sound of the band given her vocal stylings and talent.
