Tyrese is an American hip hop artist and R&B singer who sometimes goes by the name of Black-Ty. Currently enjoying a career on the silver screen, his solo music career launched in 1998 with his self-titled record. Before going solo, he worked as an MC and also rapped with an underground group. To date, he has released five albums, the most recent of these being this year's Black Rose. Tyrese is known for his mellow style of R&B, and although he has roots in rap, it is not apparent in his solo releases. He has a laid back way of performing which makes his songs more suited to the pop charts. That being said, his R&B style may be considered average by some. One of his criticisms is that there has never been anything in particular to set him apart from his contemporaries in the industry. Apart from his self-titled album and Black Rose, Tyrese has released 2000 Watts (2001), I Wanna Go There (2002), and Alter Ego (2006). These records have all charted at no. 23 or higher on the US Billboard Charts. Album sales hit their peak with the 2002 record at 877,000 sold; the 2006 release only saw 362,488 copies sold and the Billboard rating dropped 7 places from no. 16 to no. 23. Sales of Black Rose have yet to be calculated.
