Vanessa Carlton is an American pop singer who enjoyed sudden popularity with her release of the record Be Not Nobody in 2002. Her single from that album, "A Thousand Miles", reached as high as no. 5 on the U.S. Billboard Charts, and no. 1 on many international charts. The song showcased Carlton as a very polished and talented young female singer, and let her audience know that she had the drive to succeed. nnUnfortunately, Carlton's second release, Harmonium, did not reach its expected sales numbers. Because of this, the singer left A&M records and signed on with The Inc. for her new release Heroes and Thieves (2007). Despite the lowered record sales, Carlton retained her unique singing style for her second record, which was not as well received. Because of this, it is believed that with a heavier push from marketing on Heroes and Thieves, she will enjoy a renewed interest in the record.nnCarlton has also collaborated on cover versions of songs that were previously released by veteran singers and songwriters. She provided backing vocals for the Counting Crows' version of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" for the movie Two Weeks' Notice, and did the same for Zucchero and Haylie Ecker for the Korgis song "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime".nnThe singer has an ability to not only express herself while working on her own, but also to work with other talented musicians and help create a new spin on a classic. This flexibility, coupled with natural grace and talent, are sure to keep Vanessa Carlton afloat in the industry.
