Professionally called tobyMac, Toby McKeehan was born on October 22, 1964, in Fairfax, Virginia. He gained popularity as the lead singer and songwriter in the popular Christian music group 'dc Talk.' TobyMac when on to record five well-received solo albums including 'Momentum,' 'Re:Mix Momentum,' 'Welcome to Diverse City,' 'Renovating Diverse City' and 'Portable Sounds.'
In 2001, tobyMac released the track 'Extreme Days' for the Christian production company Truth Builder's film of the same name. He also released his debut album 'Momentum' in the same year. It reached the top position on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The album also won the 'Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year' award that year. In 2002, he released the EP 'This Christmas' by ForeFront Records. Next year, he released 'Re:Mix Momentum,' which is the second album consisting of remixes of several songs from the first album, 'Momentum.'
In 2004, he released his third album, 'Welcome to Diverse City,' which reached number 54 on the Billboard 200, selling 21,000 copies in its first week. A hit track from this album, 'The Slam,' made it onto the soundtracks for the films 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift' and 'Transporter 2;' as well as the popular TV show Prison Break. The adrenaline-fueled track 'The Slam' can also be heard on numerous WWE programs, NBA Finals, men's NCAA clips and 'The Ultimate Highlight' on Sportscenter.
'Renovating Diverse City' was tobyMac's fourth album, which is a remix of the previous album, 'Welcome to Diverse City.' His songs 'Burn for You' and 'Atmosphere' got him more commercial spots. Recently, the songs 'Get This Party Started,' 'Extreme Days,' 'Yours,' and 'Momentum' can be found on the soundtrack to the Xbox 360 game 'Crackdown.' In 2006, Toby released another EP titled 'Top Five Hits EP.' He also recorded the anthemic track 'New World' for the record 'Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.'
His highest charting solo album, 'Portable Sounds,' was released on February 20, 2007. It contains the hit singles 'I'm For You' and 'Made to Love.' The album peaked at No 10 on the Billboard 200, selling 50,645 copies in the first week. It also appeared at number one on the SoundScan Contemporary Christian Overall chart.
tobyMac has won several Dove Awards and two BMI honors as Christian Songwriter. He has co-authored two inspirational books with Michael Tait; 'Under God' and 'Living Under God.'
