3G iPhone On The Way

All signs seem to point to a June arrival for the eagerly awaited 3G iPhone from Apple. For one thing, like the tide retreating from a beach before a tsunami, current iPhones have disappeared from Apple store shelves. Numerous reports from China indicate that manufacturing is due to begin on the next-gen iPhone in May. Apple's World Wide Developers Conference is scheduled for June 9-13, and many analysts predict an announcement of the new phone will be made there.

What will be in the new iPhone? We know for sure it will operate on AT&T Wireless' speedy 7.2 Mb/s HSDPA network, currently available in 270 markets in the U.S. and 350 markets by the end of the year according to AT&T. An unlocked version also will be available in several non-U.S. markets, including Belgium and Italy, at least. iPhone also will be available in Canada through Rogers Wireless later this year.

We may also get a break on pricing. Fortune Magazine reports there will be two versions, 8 GB and 16 GB, at $399 and $499 respectively, but AT&T will offer a $200 subsidy for folks who sign up for two years. Several rumors have persisted that there will be a 32 GB version.

The iPhone rumor mill also has been swirling about what the 3G iPhone will look and act like. The strongest possibility is the current controversial recessed headphone jack will be replaced by a standard flush jack. The new model may also include true GPS capabilities, it may be smaller and lighter thanks to a plastic rather than metal enclosure.

One report from Taiwan says its screen will shrink from 3.5 to 2.8 inches, but we have a hard time believing that. It may have a front-mounted camera for possible video telephony, however, and could access and/or control tracks from your iTunes library through your home local area network ala AppleTV. Unfortunately, it likely will not include haptic response for its touch keypad.

Knowing Apple, though, the 3G iPhone will probably include some insanely cool functions no one has thought of yet.
