The Original King

With the tragic passing of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, we are reminded of the original King, Elvis Presley. Another creative genius and cultural icon, Elvis Presley's groundbreaking body of work allowed Rhythm & Blues, Rock n Roll and Pop music to merge forever. Until Michael Jackson, no other artist could touch the cultural, iconic power of Elvis, whose early hits of the 50’s and 60’s, “All Shook Up,”“Hound Dog,”“Don’t Be Cruel” and “Heartbreak Hotel,” were the cornerstone of Rock n Roll history. His full-bodied, soulful voice also redefined older classics, such as “Blue Moon” and “Love Letters.” Presley’s late career held many landmark 70’s hits as well, such as “Always On My Mind,” “Solitaire,” and “Burning Love.” Don’t miss Thumbplay’s entire catalog of Elvis tones and MP3’s!

Michael Jackson's legacy cannot be disputed: the King of Pop made an indelible mark on music history. From his early days as a child prodigy with the Jackson 5, to his chart dominating Thriller days, Jackson's hits are the trademark songs of several generations. Discover young Michael’s breathtaking soulfulness in his cover of the great Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and his soaring vocals in the Jackson 5 smash “I’ll Be There,” which was famously covered by Mariah Carey. After his success with the Jackson 5, Michael’s solo career was immediately a sensation with his chart-topping 1970’s classic “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough.” No star shone brighter than Jackson’s in the 1980’s, shattering the charts with hit after hit, including “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” and “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).” The hits kept rolling in the 1990’s, with classics like “Bad,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Black or White.” While Jackson’s early death has shocked the world, he leaves behind a timeless canon of music.

Idols® Rock on Thumbplay

Last night's American Idol® theme was good, old rock n' roll classics. With only two weeks left until the grand finale, four lucky Idols® remain standing. First up on last night’s rock themed show, Adam Lambert reminded the judges why he is this season’s favorite, flawlessly performing Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love.” Teen rocker, Alison Iraheta, received cold reviews for her performance of Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby.” She might have fared better with Simon’s pick, Queen’s “Somebody to Love,” or her original choice, Jefferson Airplane’s Somebody to Love.” Simon’s prediction: Alison will coast to freedom after her duet with Adam Lambert of Guitar Hero III favorite, Foghat’s “Slow Ride.” Kris Allen’s subtle, folksy style did not translate well for the judges, who felt that his vocals did not meet the challenge of “Come Together” by The Beatles. Last up was Danny Gokey, valiantly trying to emulate Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler with “Dream On.” Though Danny’s performance was shaky, remind yourself of Steven Tyler’s brilliant vocal on this live version of the classic. Check out other Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Queen and Aerosmith tones, MP3's, videos and graphics, plus our America's Favorites page here at Thumbplay.

Not to be outdone, the theatrical Adam Lambert nailed Nina Simone’s version of “Feeling Good,” another hit made famous by Sammy Davis Jr. Check out the huge Thumbplay catalog of Rat Pack MP3’s, ringtones and graphics, including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin.

Idols® Show Their "Hot Stuff"

Last night's American Idol® took to the dance floor with a disco themed night. Kicking off the night was Lil Rounds with a poorly-received rendition of Chaka Khan's "I’m Every Woman," followed by Kris Allen with his inventive and praised take on Donna Summer’s "She Works Hard for the Money." Up next were two judge favorites: Danny Gokey, who seemingly can do no wrong with the judges, performing "September" from Earth, Wind and Fire, and Allison Iraheta powering through Donna Summer’s "Hot Stuff." Rounding out the night was the heavily favored rocker, Adam Lambert, doing a tender reinterpretation of Yvonne Elliman’s "If I Can't Have You," and the “saved” singer Matt Giraud performing “Stayin’ Alive” by the BeeGees. Did your favorite Idol® do justice to the originals? Download MP3’s and tones of the original disco classics here at Thumbplay, and make sure to check out past Idols® in our America’s Favorites section.

It's a Mad "Idol" World!

Yet again, American Idol ® front-runner Adam Lambert gave an astonishing performance, this time of the Tears for Fears classic "Mad World." Tonight, nervous fans will learn the fate of those contestants who did not receive high marks from the judges – is this the last stand for Scott McIntyre after his lackluster cover of “The Search Is Over” by Survivor? !!! Just Dance !!!

American Idol fan sites and message boards are gaga today over the one and only Lady GaGa, with her smoking performance on last night's American Idol results show. Although our lovely A.I. favorite, Megan Joy, was cast-off after a shaky performance of Bob Marley’sTurn Your Lights Down Low,” Lady GaGa brought the house down with her flamboyant, artistic performance. Belting out her #1 hit “Poker Face,” Lady GaGa began the show demurely playing her glass piano filled with bubbles, then busted into an outer space-themed dance number to the delight of the crowd. Widely known in the dance club circuit and performance art circles, Lady GaGa first took the charts by the horns last year with her #1 hit "Just Dance." She is among a rare group of artists, along with powerhouses Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera, whose first two singles reached the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. You can check out our catalogue of Lady GaGa MP3’s at Thumbplay.

VH1 Shows: Tones & Graphics

For those of us who love VH1 shows, there's tons of cool mobile content available. One of my favorite shows is Flavor of Love. For years, I've been a Public Enemy fan. They were one of the most innovative Rap groups of the 80's /90's and brought Flavor Flav to the forefront as one of Rap's most original hype men. Their collaboration with Metal group Anthrax was a huge success. "Bring The Noise" was one of their big hits. VH1's show Flavor Of Love has catapulted Flav's career again and has given us all countless hours of entertainment. Another VH1 show favorite is Hogan Knows Best. When this show launched, I was so glad to see Hulk Hogan back on TV. It's been years since I've seen him in the ring, so to see him in his 'dad' role was pretty neat. Bret Michaels is definitely keeping busy these days. If you're a fan of the band Poison, then you may want to check out Rock of Love: Ringtones and Graphics. Flo Rida: Breaking Records

The download numbers for Flo Rida's new single "Right Round" are astounding. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the song has seen 636,000 copies sold this week. So far, this track holds the current record for first week sales, beating the last record-breaker which was Flo Rida's "Low" on 1/12. Lady GaGa holds the third place spot for "Just Dance", Eminem comes in fourth place for "Crack A Bottle" and Beyonce follows in fifth with "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)". All have seen unprecedented numbers. It's also worth noting that newcomer Katy Perry hit 334,000 downloads her first week with "Hot N Cold".

If you haven't checked out Flo Rida's "Right Round" yet, give it a listen here. It's one of the hottest tones out now! The hook of the song might sound familiar to some of you, since it samples "You Spin Me 'Round" from 80's group Dead Or Alive. This song is definitely going to break more records in the coming weeks, look out for it...

Rock Music News

This week has been a good one for Rock music fans, in the form of summer concert announcements. Def Leppard just released their plans for a summer tour, which will include Classic Rockers Cheap Trick and Bret Michael's band Poison. In addition, Def Leppard will share the bill on June 12th with Whitesnake and Journey, for a show at the 02, a new arena venue in Dublin. For many long-time fans, it's always a thrill when these artists decide to come around, playing their classic hits. All 5 bands that I've mentioned had some of the biggest hits in Rock music during the 70's and 80's. Here are some of their Ringtones and MP3s, if you'd like to check them out - guaranteed you've heard some of these.

Def Leppard: Their last single was "Nine Lives" which featured Country artist Tim McGraw. Posion which features Bret Michaels from VH1's Rock Of Love show: "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" and "Nothin' But A Good Time". Cheap Trick: "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me" which was used in many commercials and movies. Journey with the great Steve Perry singing: "Don't Stop Believin'" of course from the Sopranos and the classic "Lights". Whitesnake: "Is This Love" and "Fool For Your Loving".

Pop Ringtones and MP3s

If you're a Pop Music junkie like me, you know there are certain artists that have changed and shaped the mainstream music scene. Every few years, an exceptional artist comes along and redefines popular culture. Rihanna is one of those artists. She has had a continual string of hits on Pop radio the past few years."Umbrella" was a huge smash on radio stations all over the country, and paved the way for the successful line of singles that followed. Rihanna's latest titled "Rehab" featuring Justin Timberlake, is reaching the heights that "Disturbia" and "Take A Bow" previously saw.
With Christina Aguilera's first hit "Genie In A Bottle" released in late 1999, she set the standard of Pop Music for the new Millenium. Songs like "Come On Over Baby" and "What A Girl Wants" followed, claiming her a spot as one of the industry's top divas. Newcomer Katy Perry has turned around a huge amount of success in very little time. Her three singles "I Kissed A Girl", "Hot N Cold" and the latest "Thinking Of You" are everywhere.
But right now, there's no Pop star bigger than Beyonce. Starring as the lead in the 90's group Destiny's Child, she went on to launch her own successful solo career and has now become a household name. Songs like "Irreplaceable" and "Naughty Girl" helped to establish her as a bona fide superstar.

And if there was one singer who influenced everyone, it would have to be Michael Jackson. Formerly of the Jackson 5, he led what could possibly be the most successful solo Pop career with hits like "Thriller", "Billie Jean", "Smooth Criminal", "Black Or White" and countless others.

Hip Hop's Greatest

There have been so many great Hip Hop songs over the years. Since it's start in the 70's, Old School Rap has developed into what it is today, going through various phases and spawning off many sub-genres. Let me share of the most popular songs that have come out of the past thirty years...

Let's kick it off with some of the Old School tracks: Grand Master Caz "South Bronx Subway Rap", Sugarhill Gang "Rapper's Delight", Grand Master Flash "White Lines" & "The Message", LL Cool J's "Going Back To Cali", Newcleus' "Jam On It" and Run-DMC's "King of Rock" . Then of course there was The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa and so many more. Check our Old School Rap section for more choices.

Some of the best West Coast rappers came out of Dr. Dre's camp. Here are some of the top hits from Cali: "Let Me Ride" by Dr. Dre, "Lodi Dodi" by Snoop, Warren G's "Regulate", 2Pac's "Ambitionz Az A Ridah" and The Game's "Hate It Or Love It".

East Coast Hip Hop has also brought us some of the greatest Rappers. Here's some of the best: Jay-Z "Excuse Me Miss", Notorious B.I.G. "Mo Money Mo Problems", Diddy "It's All About The Benjamins", 50 Cent "I Get Money", DMX "Ruff Ryders Anthem" and then of course there's the Wu-Tang...

The South has spawned so many hits, the list is too long to mention. Artists like T.I., Lil Wayne, Outkast, Plies, Rick Ross, Flo Rida, Luda, Jeezy and DJ Khaled have put the South on the map.

Check our Rap category for all choices.

Incredible New Stuff

So many huge artists have new releases out. First and foremost, there's Lil Wayne, who continues to be a top-seller across all media channels. His new single is called "Prom Queen", a guitar-driven, Rock-influenced Rap track. Kelly Clarkson has a super up-tempo tune "My Life Would Suck Without You" from her upcoming album All I Ever Wanted. U2's new one "Get On Your Boots" has hints of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" within the lyrics and melody. INXS did something similar to U2 with their song "Mediate" back in the early 90's, stylistically referencing the same Dylan track. As for hot new videos, one doesn't need to look further than Soulja Boy's "Kiss Me Thru The Phone", Kanye's "Heartless" and Nickelback's smash "Gotta Be Somebody". Oh, and did I mention Eminem's new single "Crack A Bottle" featuring Dr. Dre and 50 Cent??!! Tons of buzz on that one. Enjoy all the new music, check our Home page tabs, New Ringtones page and Charts for all the choices.

Before coming together on this project, Alison Krauss led a long career as a Bluegrass artist and Robert Plant, of course, was the lead singer of one of the most influential Rock bands of all-time, Led Zeppelin. Newcomer Adele won Best New Artist and it was good to see an old favorite, Bruce Springsteen win for Best Rock Song. Coldplay picked-up Song Of The Year for "Viva La Vida" along with two other wins, while Daft Punk received 2 awards including Best Dance Recording for their song "Harder Better Faster Stronger" (which Kanye West sampled for his song "Stronger"). Lil Wayne snatched the award for Best Rap album, and Best R&B Song went to Ne-Yo for "Miss Independent". Of course, Metallica won Best Metal Performance on their song "My Apocalypse" and not surprisingly, Estelle ft. Kanye West claimed victory for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration on their hit "American Boy". Congrats to all the winners and nominees. Click on the links above to get the MP3, Video Clip or Ringtone from your favorite artist.

Cadillac Records Ringtones

Etta James seems to be making alot of buzz about Beyonce's inaugural performance a few weeks back for President Obama. The former Destiny's Child front-woman sang the Etta James classic "At Last", which she revived for the recent movie Cadillac Records. Whatever Etta's point-of-view is, there's no denying that her original version remains a classic to this day. It's continually played on Oldies stations, as well as a favorite choice for the bride & groom dance at weddings all over the country. But if you happen to be a big Beyonce fan, her version from the movie is a definite pleaser.

Click on the links above to get ringtones or MP3's of Etta's classic or Beyonce's version.

Broadway Recordings

Not too far from where I'm blogging in SoHo, lies the Theater District in New York City. It's home to countless Broadway plays that include Musicals, Dramas and Comedies. One of the longest running shows is Phantom of the Opera. Since it's debut performance in 1988, it has now surpassed Cats as the longest running musical on Broadway. Another popular musical is Grease, which is currently playing all over the country. In 2007, NBC held a Reality TV show, where America got to vote in the two lead spots. The show generated a lot of buzz for the Broadway play, which Taylor Hicks (of American Idol fame) has recently participated.

There are a number of popular Broadway shows that were either based-off a movie or became a movie due to it's success. Some of those shows are: Rent, Dreamgirls, West Side Story and Annie. In the recent weeks, we've seen alot of interest in Seussical The Musical, based on the stories and books of Dr. Seuss.

The Jacksons

No other American family can claim as many hit songs as the Jacksons. This talented musical family has spawned The Jackson 5 and two mega-star solo artists: Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson.

The Jackson 5 came together in the late 60's and found fame in the 70's with numerous hits on the Motown label. As Michael Jackson started taking over lead vocal duties from his brother Jermaine, he eventually moved on to a huge solo career with hits like "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean".

Janet Jackson became a star on the TV show Good Times' 5th season back in the 70's as young Penny. She went on to a music career releasing hits like "Control" and "Nasty" then later following them up with other smashes like "Black Cat" and "Rhythm Nation".

Both Michael and Janet Jackson have dominated the Pop world and new generations of fans continue to pop up all over the world. Check out these two great tones from Jermaine... "Let's Get Serious" and "Burnin' Hot".

Barack Obama!

Today, Barack Obama is sworn-in as the 44th President of the United States. Celebrations are underway everywhere, especially in Washington, where an estimated two million people have shown-up to witness the historic ceremony.

Tones From The Movie Fireproof

The movie Fireproof starring Kirk Cameron, was originally released in theaters on September 26, 2008. With the DVD coming on January 27th, I'd like to point-0ut some of the great Christian artists and tones from the soundtrack, as it boasts some of the biggest names in Christian Music. Third Day lend their infetcious rocker "This Is Who I Am", while Casting Crowns contribute "Slow Fade", which has a strong and steady driving beat. Leeland's "Brighter Days" is an inspirational/optimistic tune and Warren Barfield continues to deliver impecable Christian Pop songs like "Love Is Not A Fight". Grey Holiday have also graced the soundtrack, with a beautiful song called "You Belong To Me". Christian music fans across the country will agree, that the movie is a heart-warming tale and sends as powerful a message as the music. Please click on the links above to get the movie's ringtones and other music from these artists.

American Idol Returns

Last night, the new season of American Idol premiered. Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson are back, but this time there is an additional music industry veteran added to the judging panel; her name is Kara DioGuardi. Kara has written tons of hit songs for artists like Pussycat Dolls, David Archuleta, Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera... just to name a few. She also sang lead in the group Platinum Wierd, which was formed by herself and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. This year promises to be a good one, as hundreds of diverse hopefuls auditioned for their Hollywood ticket. The show was entertaining to say the least!

We've seen many successful careers launched by the Idol franchise; and it hasn't just been winners like David Cook, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks. Other contestants have gone on to great things; Jennifer Hudson has a movie career and Diana DeGarmo has starred on Broadway. Bo Bice, David Archuleta and Elliott Yamin are enjoying solo careers, while Chris Daughtry has had numerous hits on radio and videos on MTV.

Happy Birthday To The King

Happy Birthday to Elvis Presley, who would have turned 74 tomorrow. Although the King has been gone for more than 30 years, his music still lives on. Throughout his career, Elvis' music touched upon many different styles; from Blues, Gospel, Country and Rockabilly. The best examples of this can be heard in songs like "That's All Right", "His Hand In Mine", "Release Me" and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy". Though Elvis incorporated many of these influences, he was of course best known as the "King Of Rock & Roll". Today many of his songs like "Suspicious Minds", "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Burning Love" are being discovered by new generations. Elvis' influence can also be found in a number of popular artists. Just listen to Travis Tritt, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Rascal Flatts and yes, even Billy Idol. We salute Elvis Presley, his music and legacy. Please see our Elvis page here for Ringtones and MP3's.

Disney Hits

Disney has been releasing some great music lately. Their imprint Hollywood Records has built-up it's roster around some very recognizable artists. These include such Pop stars as Demi Lovato, Jesse McCartney, Jonas Brothers, Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana). There's no denying that the hits keep coming from this powerhouse label. Disney superstar Miley's latest tone and MP3 are from her new single "Fly On The Wall". The song takes a playful jab at the papparazzi. The Jonas Brothers are back with their popular single "Lovebug". The video has been getting tons of play on MTV, while the track has been lingering on radio for months now, giving much longevity to the MP3 and tone here on Thumbplay. Jesse McCartney has been growing as a serious artist with songs like "Leavin'" and "How Do You Sleep". He just gave a live TV performance on New Year's, which I'm sure most of you saw. To check content from all Disney artists, check our Pop or Pop 00s page regularly or just search the site.

Cool Mobile Stuff

Hi Everyone, it's good to be back after the long holiday break. There's no suprise that today we're seeing all the new phones out there buzzing with some of the coolest mobile stuff. If you didn't already know... T.I., Beyonce, Soulja Boy and Katy Perry are burning up our Ringtone, Video and MP3 charts. Due to the fact that we'll have a new president sworn-in this month, Obama graphics are being dowloaded in amazing numbers. Along with that, Will.I.Am's tribute "It's A New Day" tone is also a favorite. NFL Graphics are in demand, as wallpapers and animations of favorite teams are being sported by fans. For Games... God Of War - Betrayal and 007 Quantum of Solace are still top-sellers. Animations from Neon World are big right now as well as Valentine's Day graphics. It's definitely exciting to come in from the new year and see what people are interested in. Let's all hope this next year turns out to be one of the best!
