Kaki King is a guitarist singer/songwriter who used to be a NYC Subway performer. People have been describing her as a guitar god! Her style of play is unique and impressive in its own right. Last night Kaki King played at the Showbox with Mountain Goats. She continues to tour on sold out shows across the country.
Check out how Kaki King plays on this episode of Letterman:
Tomorrow is the first day of the legendary CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, the largest and longest-running music industry event of its kind, in addition to live events and tours across the US.
Brooklyn's own MGMT, formerly known as The Management, rose to great popularity on the indie scene, surrounded by blog buzz and hipster admiration. Their sound is pretty, playful, electronic, and sometimes experimental. Their single "Time to Pretend" was named by Pitchfork as one of the top 100 songs of the year 2007. The album "Oracular Spectacular" boasts such singles as "Electric Feel," and "Kids." In 2008, MGMT opened for both M.I.A. and Beck.
Today MGMT came out with a new weird music video for "The Youth" created by Eric of Tim and Eric Awesome Show:
What's that great song in the trailer for Pineapple Express? It's Paper Planes from Sri Lankan superstar M.I.A.
This single was already a hit with a controversial singer, video, and lyrics. What makes it so sensational? Aside from turning gunshots into music, the song seems to be about smuggling and making fake visas. Perhaps an ode to the realities of immigrant culture. Not sure but it's a killer beat and it makes sense for Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogan and James Franco.
What's more fitting for a stoner movie than the lyrics "Fly like paper, get high like planes?" Not advocating any such activity here, but it's a fun song and Pineapple Express promises to be an even more fun summer movie.
College preppies turned indy rock band, Vampire Weekend appeals to hipsters and teenyboppers (do people still use that word?) alike. Their musical hooks sink into you like, well - fangs. Catchy and young, Vampire Weekend does alt rock justice. The band gained so much exposure so quickly, they were declared "The Year's Best New Band" by Spin magazine in the March 2008 issue, and were the first band to be shot for the cover of the magazine before releasing their debut album. They've also been featured in Rolling Stone, and performed as guests on SNL in the short life of their band. Exciting!
What do you think about Vampire Weekend? Awesome indy rock or overplayed poseurs?
Tay Zonday is a People's Voice Award-Nominated, Youtube Award-Winning, Webby Award-Winning singer-songwriter with more than 40 million video views on Youtube.
He blasted into the worldwide spotlight with his viral hit "Chocolate Rain". "Chocolate Rain" is arguably one of the most successful youtube hits ever. The catchy song has left an indelible mark on youth culture.
Zonday joined mainstream-music legends Weezer in the video for their 2008 "Pork & Beans" single. With a baritone voice that is often compared to Paul Robeson, Barry White, and Brad Roberts of the Crash Test Dummies. What will he do next? I don't know but those lyrics sure are somethin' ...
Chocolate Rain Some stay dry and others feel the pain
Indie band Modest Mouse is back on the scene tonight with a surprise secret show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn tonight. The doors open at 1am and the show starts at 1:30am. Do you dare to stay out so late on a school night to check out these darling emo folk rockers?
Mark Ronson: The hottest producer out right now, mixes and redefines hip hop and pop beats
Portishead: One of my favorite acts of all time - their music defined the trip-hop trend and fans who have been dying for more finally get their wish with a new Portishead album coming out this year
MGMT: This electronic duo bring the party with incredibly fun dance beats. Definitely a good choice for a ringtone. Sufjan Stevens: This emo indie music darling writes songs so sweet and complex they make you want to curl up in a little ball and cry, but it's a good thing.
Tori Amos: Tori has been worshipped with a cult like following for over a decade now, and with good reason. Few songwriters exist like her these days. Her voice is beautiful and she can play the sh** out of a piano!
The Wrens: These Jersey rockers have been around since the 80s and quite simply, they create solid, gorgeous music.
Elliott Smith: The death of Elliott Smith was all the more tragic when you hear the intensity of emotion in this singer/songwriter's voice. His music is heartfelt, genuine, and well-written.
Beastie Boys' Adrock added his flavor to the Sri Lankan sensation's hot track, Paper Planes. M.I.A. has a new EP out of Paper Plane remixes, titled the Paper Planes (Homeland Security Remixes) EP, and it includes Adrock's remix. Adam Horovitz steps it up for those who already love this song, and remind us why it's such a hot beat.
Nope, not the capitol of Lebanon, and not that beer pong game - I'm talking about the band. Beruit is headed by 22-year-old Santa Fe native Zach Condon. He takes advantage of a variety of instruments and beautiful sounds. Beirut is soft, sweet, folksy indie rock. It can also be described as Balkan Gypsy music. I'll bet you don't hear a ton of that on your phone, do you?
Last week, Indie band Rogue Wave came to New York City. I had the pleasure of meeting them before their headlining show at The Bowery Ballroom. For a band that's playing to sold-out crowds across the country, they couldn't have been a nicer group of guys.
Their new album Asleep at Heaven's Gate is getting tons of press. With an underlying touch of melancholy, their tunes are slick and tight, incorporating edgy sounds that set them apart from a number of bands that are out now.
