Thumbplay Falls "Between The Trees"
The excellent Orlando-based band Between The Trees is riding the wave of good reviews from their recent album, entitled Spain. On the heels of the album's first single, "We Can Try," the band completed a North American tour featuring several gigs in New York, Texas and their native Florida. Don’t miss our favorite track, the contagious “Story of a Boy.”In between tours with the smoking hot artists Anberlin and Switchfoot, Between The Trees has found time to contribute their time and music to the initiative To Write Love On Her Arms, a depression awareness project that promotes community action for the cause through music. Their work with the non-profit group inspired the song “A Time For Yohe,” featured on their 2006 debut album, The Story and the Song. Thumbplay Goes Country With Carrie Underwood's New Single
Carrie Underwood, one of the top-selling artists in the history of the Country genre, releases her eagerly anticipated new album today, entitled Play On. The album's first single, "Cowboy Casanova," is currently at #3 on the Country charts, marking yet another top-charting single for Underwood. Other winning tracks on the new record include “Change” and “Quitter.”
Carrie’s debut album Some Hearts, featuring the American Idol single “Inside Your Heaven,” produced an astounding number of hit singles. Three songs shot to #1: “Jesus Take The Wheel,”“Wasted,” and the saucy “Before He Cheats.”
The Oklahoma native scored just as well with her sophomore record, Carnival Ride. Four tracks climbed to the top of the charts: “So Small,” “All-American Girl,” “Last Name,” and “Just A Dream.” Carrie also achieved sleeper hits with cover versions of Randy Travis’s “I Told You So,” Martina McBride’s “Independence Day,” and Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home.”

Rihanna surprised fans today with the unannounced release of her new single, "Russian Roulette," available as a free streaming download on her official website. The song is the first single off of the singer’s forthcoming album, entitled Rated R, due next month.

New Moon, the next installment in the Twilight film series isn't released until November 20th; however, the rocking soundtrack hits the shelves later this week. The album features new music from top artists Death Cab For Cutie, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, The Killers, Muse, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and OK Go. Other fresh bands on the soundtrack include Band Of Skulls, Lykke Li, Anya Marina, Sea Wolf, Editors, and moody composer Alexandre Desplat.
The record promises to be a solid follow-up to the hit soundtrack for the first Twilight film, which included Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole,” Linkin Park’s “Leave Out All The Rest,” Iron And Wine’s “Flightless Bird, American Mouth,” and Paramore’s “Decode” and “I Caught Myself.”

The wait is finally over: Mariah Carey's eagerly anticipated new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, will finally hit the shelves today. The buzz over Fort Worth band Green River Ordinance is growing strong this month, as the band rocks venues all over the country to promote their Virgin Records debut album, Out Of My Hands. Latin Grammy® Award Nominations Announced
Calle 13, the Latin-Reggaeton group from Puerto Rico, have cemented their status as one of the top breakthrough Latin artists of the past few years. Of their five total Latin Grammy® nods, the troupe was nominated for their single “No Hay Nadie Como Tu,” from their hit album Los De Atras Vienen Conmigo. The album was also nominated for Album of the Year.
Other nominees include: Salsa veteran Gilberto Santa Rosa, who scored three nominations for his album, Si No Vas A Cocinar. Reggaeton superstars Wisín & Yandel nabbed several nomination as well. Natalia Lafourcade was honored in the Best Female Pop Album category along with starlet Amaia Montero. La Oreja De Van Gogh, La Quinta Estacion and Reik will vie for Best Pop Album by Group or Duo.

Shakira's hotly anticipated upcoming album, entitled She Wolf, is primed for release next month. The She Wolf title track, also released in Spanish as "Loba," is already topping the charts in North America, South America and Europe. Shakira broke onto the scene as a youngster, with her 1995 album Pies Descalzos. Kanye West on Fire
The Kanye West buzz is still burning up the internet. Since his shocking disruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at Sunday's awards show, West has made several apologies to Ms. Swift, apparently not satiating the public’s interest in the story. Kanye first apologized via his Twitter account, followed by a televised apology on the new Jay Leno Show, plus a personal phone call made to Taylor Swift. You know you’re hot when the President weighs-in on the controversy!
For those of you catching-up on the brouhaha, Kanye West stormed the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. The reason for the disruption? Kanye wanted to proclaim his preference for Beyonce’s video, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).” Always the lady, Swift politely stepped aside while Kanye West was heckled by the crowd. In a display of her trademark class, Beyonce took the opportunity, when she won Video Of The Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” to invite Taylor Swift on-stage to finish her speech.
After days of apologies, and Presidential off-the-cuff remarks, interest has piqued in the news of an upcoming Kanye West and Lady GaGa tour. Remembering Dancer, Film Star Patrick Swayze
1980's heart throb Patrick Swayze has died after a public battle with pancreatic cancer. The star made an impression in several notable films, including Dirty Dancing, Ghost and Donnie Darko. The retro soundtracks, many of which sparked comeback hits for forgotten classics, were the trademark of many Swayze’s films.
Aguably Swayze's biggest cinematic hit, the drama Ghost featured a huge resurgence in popularity for the Righteous Brothers classic “Unchained Melody.” The popular film Dirty Dancing, in which Swayze famously showcased his dancing ability, also produced an enormous hit with the film's 60's-inspired soundtrack. Dirty Dancing included some of the greatest songs of the era, including “Do You Love Me” by The Contours and “Love Is Strange” by Mickey & Sylvia. Among the retro hits featured in Swayze's films are Donnie Darko's “Notorious” by Duran Duran, and “Mad World” and “Head Over Heels” by Tears For Fears; “Stay Gold” by Stevie Wonder from The Outsiders; Dion's "Runaround Sue" from Roadhouse; Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" from Waking Up In Reno; and "If 6 Was 9" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience from Point Break.

MTV Video Music Awards Full of Thrills
Never one to shy away from controversy, Kanye West stormed the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech to proclaim his preference for Beyonce’s video, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).” Swift, always the lady, politely stepped aside while Kanye West was heckled by the crowd. In a display of her trademark class, Beyonce took the opportunity, when she won Video Of The Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” to invite Taylor Swift on-stage to finish the speech Kanye cut short.
More excitement ensued when Lady GaGa appeared to be injured during her elaborate dance sequence for her hit “Paparazzi.” In fact, it was all part of the dramatic, gory performance which morphed into horror movie madness, interpreted by some as an homage to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" and Madonna’s famous 1980’s MTV VMA performance of “Like A Virgin.”
Earlier in the evening, Madonna gave a heartfelt tribute to Michael Jackson , preceded by a special appearance from Janet Jackson. Janet’s performance was part of a larger tribute that included dance re-enactments of Michael’s “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Bad” videos.
Other memorable live performances included Muse, with their new single “Uprising,” The All-American Rejects with " Gives You Hell,” Pitbull with his hit "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho),” Taylor Swift singing “You Belong With Me,” Pink performing her hit “Sober” from a trapeze, and finally, the much-anticipated “Empire State Of Mind” duet with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

American Idol Confirms Ellen Degeneres as New Judge
Renowned talk show host and comedian Ellen Degeneres surprised American Idol® fans today with the announcement she will be the fourth judge, replacing original panelist Paula Abdul. The high profile move came on the heels of last month’s surprise move by Abdul to depart the show after eight seasons.
American Idol® was a huge comeback for the songstress, making her a star of the small screen, and the adoration of a new generation. Paula was a darling of the late 80's and early 90's pop charts, with a string of #1 hits, including “Forever Your Girl,” “Straight Up” and “Cold Hearted.” Before launching her singing career, Abdul was a sought-after dance choreographer, known for her work with Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson and the Jackson family, whom she credits with discovering her cheerleading at a Lakers basketball game. Her tender critiques of contestants became a distinctive element of American Idol®.
The immediate public reaction has been both hot and cold for Degeneres. Many bloggers have praised her as a compassionate, experienced live performer whose success lends her credibility. Others have criticized her as too soft and out of her element in the music world. Audiences can judge for themselves when the new season premieres next January.

Michael Jackson To Be Laid To Rest
After three months of memorials and celebrations of his life, Michael Jackson will finally be laid to rest today in Los Angeles. While the circumstances of Mr. Jackson's sudden death are still under investigation, the long journey for the pop star will culminate in a private family funeral at the famed Forest Lawn Cemetery.
From his early days as a child prodigy with the Jackson 5, to his chart dominating Thriller days, Jackson's hits are the trademark songs of several generations. The young Michael made an early impact on audiences with the breathtaking soulfulness in his cover of the great Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and his soaring vocals in the Jackson 5 smash “I’ll Be There,” which was famously covered by Mariah Carey. After his success with the Jackson 5, Michael’s solo career was immediately a sensation with his chart-topping 1970’s classic “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough.” No star shone brighter than Jackson’s in the 1980’s, shattering the charts with hit after hit, including “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” and “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).” The hits kept rolling in the 1990’s, with classics like “Bad,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Black or White.”
In July, the King of Pop’s friends and family gathered to honor Michael Jackson's music and life at a star-studded memorial service. The service was highlighted by musical tributes by many of his peers, including Mariah Carey with “I’ll Be There,” Jennifer Hudson with “Will You Be There,” John Mayer with “Human Nature,” and Usher with “Gone Too Soon.” Other friends of Jackson who paid tribute include Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Queen Latifah, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. The most moving moment of the memorial came when Jackson’s family entered the service to one of Michael’s most emotional songs, "Man In The Mirror."

Lil Wayne Ridin' High
Rapper Lil Wayne continues to storm the Thumbplay charts with tracks from his upcoming Rock album and collaborations with other top rappers. Les Paul, The Godfather of Guitar Rock, Dies at 94
Guitar innovator and general rock god, Les Paul, passed away today at the very-rocking age of 94. Just last year, Paul was awarded the prestigious "American Music Masters" award from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in the company of other music greats, such as Janis Joplin and Jerry Lee Lewis. A true innovator of guitar design, Les Paul’s famous instruments have been played by countless musicians, among them Slash, of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver fame, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, and Eric Clapton, who is credited with the resurgence of Les Paul’s legendary Gibson guitar design.

James Morrison Takes The Airwaves
Pop-Folk sensation James Morrison has seen a sudden surge in popularity since last week’s launch of the Overstock.com TV spot that features his new single, “You Make It Real.” From the current album Songs For You, Truths For Me, “You Make It Real” is another breakthrough hit for the UK sensation. The singer/songwriter has shared the stage with some of the best and brightest talent, including a collaboration with Nelly Furtado on the song “Broken Strings,” and a world tour with R&B ingénue Corinne Bailey Rae. Morrison topped the UK charts with “You Give Me Something,” from his first album, Undiscovered. Other hits from the artist’s debut album include “Wonderful World,” “The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore,” and the title track, “Undiscovered.”

Thumbplay Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock
The Woodstock music festival of 1969 celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend. The 3-day music festival, which began on August 15, 1969, is remembered as the quintessential statement of peace through music, and has gone on to define the countercultural crossroads of an entire generation.
The festival introduced three of the world’s legendary guitar impresarios: Richie Havens, known for his unique and intense versions of famous songs such as “Strawberry Fields Forever” and Bob Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman;” Santana, whose performances of tunes like “Black Magic Woman” still remain hugely popular; and the gone-but-not-forgotten genius, Jimi Hendrix, who hit the scene with “Foxey Lady” “Purple Haze” and a killer cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.’ Other legendary performances on the Woodstock stage include The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Sly & The Family Stone, The Band led by Levon Helm, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Jefferson Airplane.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler Rocks His Way Off The Stage
Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler took a tumble from the stage at last night's South Dakota show. The dynamic singer was starting their 90's hit “Love In An Elevator” when he missed a step and fell into the crowd. Aerosmith is currently on the road in anticipation of their astonishing 15th album, to be released later this year. Special guests ZZ Top are featured on the tour as well.

Paula Abdul Leaving American Idol
Paula Abdul saddened American Idol® fans today with the announcement that she will not be returning for the next season of the hit show. Paula was a darling of the late 80's and early 90's pop charts, with a string of #1 hits, including “Forever Your Girl,” “Straight Up” and “Cold Hearted.”
Before launching her singing career, Abdul was a sought-after dance choreographer, known for her work with Janet Jackson and the Jackson family, whom she credits with discovering her cheerleading at a Lakers basketball game. From there, Paula Abdul went on to choreograph dance sequences for many feature films, including The Doors. After her huge success as a recording artist, she penned hits for other top singers, such as “Spinning Around” for Kylie Minogue.

Her tender critiques of contestants became a trademark of the show. Big Artists on Tap for Summer Festivals
The season of star-studded outdoor festivals is upon us, with the biggest artists playing this past weekend at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The festival's opening night on Friday brought out the big guns with headliner Jay-Z, whose new single “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” has taken over the charts. Jay-Z, who was a last minute replacement for the The Beastie Boys, was joined by Vampire Weekend, Q-Tip, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, currently on fire with their new single “Heads Will Roll.”
Saturday’s line-up included rockers My Bloody Valentine, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, and alt-country phenom Neko Case, who has enjoyed a flourishing solo career after her time with Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers. Sunday’s show ended the festival with a bang – superstars Coldplay headlined the night, supported by MGMT, Mogwai, The Black Keys, and 80’s new wave gods Echo & The Bunnymen.

Eminem and Mariah Carey Face Off!
The on-going rivalry between the two superstars turned white hot today, with Eminem leaking a follow-up to his recent "Bagpipes From Baghdad." "Bagpipes," a track from Eminem's recent album Relapse, featured a controversial reference to Mariah Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon. Mariah responded with the sassy hit, “Obsessed,” which is currently topping the Thumbplay MP3 charts, alongside Black Eyed Peas’ “Gotta Feeling” and Drake’s “Best I Ever Had.”
The steamy rivalry continues to intrigue music fans, who can’t get enough of either star. As one of the key developers of the Neo-soul movement, along with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, Maxwell broke onto the R&B scene in 1996 with his album Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, including the hits Sumthin' Sumthin' - Mellosmoothe, Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), Til The Cops Come Knockin and Whenever, Wherever, Whatever. Michael Jackson's Family and Friends Honor The Singer At Memorial Concert
The brightest stars of the music industry gathered today to honor Michael Jackson's music and life. Less than two weeks after the untimely passing of the King of Pop, a memorial service in Los Angeles celebrated the singer's achievements, featuring performances from his peers, including Mariah Carey with “I’ll Be There,” Jennifer Hudson with “Will You Be There,” John Mayer with “Human Nature,” Usher with “Gone Too Soon,” plus group performances of Jackson’s hits “Heal the World” and “We Are The World.” Other friends of Jackson who paid tribute include Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Queen Latifah, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. The most moving moment of the memorial came when Jackson’s family entered the service to one of Michael’s most emotional songs, "Man in the Mirror."

Stars Honor Michael Jackson at Last Night's BET Awards©
Michael Jackson was in the hearts and minds of the artists at last night's BET Awards©. Janet Jackson made a surprise appearance, thanking fans for their support. New Edition reunited with Bobby Brown to perform a medley of Jackson 5 songs, including “I Want You Back” and “ABC.” Other memorable moments included Ciara’s emotional performance of Jackson’s “Heal The World,” Ne-yo’s crooning version of “Lady In My Life,” and the duet by Ne-yo and Jamie Foxx of “I’ll Be There.” Jamie Foxx added some humor by periodically appearing on stage in Jackson’s trademark outfits, including the iconic red leather jacket from “Thriller” and the black leather suit with loafers from “Billie Jean.” Beyonce and Maxwell also made tribute to Michael Jackson during their performances. Country Video Music Award Show
The stars were shining at last night's awards show. Tons of great performances came from Country's A-list, including Dierks Bentley with “Sideways,” Joey & Rory rocking their hit "Cheater Cheater, and " Lady Antebellum performing "Looking For A Good Time." Kris Allen the Surprise Victor of American Idol®
Fresh off his stunning Idol® win, the tone for Kris Allen's new single "No Boundaries" has hit Thumbplay! Kris is headed for stardom with his Jason Mraz-like style, having transformed many hit pop songs over the season into his own folksy style, such as Kanye West’s “Heartless” and OneRepublic’s “Apologize.”

Gleeful Tones Humming at Thumbplay

Idols® Rock on Thumbplay
Last night's American Idol® theme was good, old rock n' roll classics. With only two weeks left until the grand finale, four lucky Idols® remain standing. First up on last night’s rock themed show, Adam Lambert reminded the judges why he is this season’s favorite, flawlessly performing Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” Teen rocker, Alison Iraheta, received cold reviews for her performance of Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby.” She might have fared better with Simon’s pick, Queen’s “Somebody to Love,” or her original choice, Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love.” Simon’s prediction: Alison will coast to freedom after her duet with Adam Lambert of Guitar Hero III favorite, Foghat’s “Slow Ride.” Kris Allen’s subtle, folksy style did not translate well for the judges, who felt that his vocals did not meet the challenge of “Come Together” by The Beatles. Last up was Danny Gokey, valiantly trying to emulate Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler with “Dream On.” Though Danny’s performance was shaky, remind yourself of Steven Tyler’s brilliant vocal on this live version of the classic. Step Into the Thumbplay Rat Pack Lounge
American Idol® is getting down to the wire, with only five contestants standing. The remaining Idols® channeled their inner Sinatras last night, belting out classic crooner standards. Kris Allen impressed the judges with his suave, contemporary interpretation of Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight,” followed by Alison Iraheta’s own Sinatra ballad “Someone To Watch Over Me.” Matt Giraud wowed Simon with his take on Sammy Davis, Jr.’s “My Funny Valentine,” but then Danny Gokey came along and belted out a flawless “Come Rain or Shine,” another Sammy hit. Idols® Show Their "Hot Stuff"
Last night's American Idol® took to the dance floor with a disco themed night. Kicking off the night was Lil Rounds with a poorly-received rendition of Chaka Khan's "I’m Every Woman," followed by Kris Allen with his inventive and praised take on Donna Summer’s "She Works Hard for the Money." Up next were two judge favorites: Danny Gokey, who seemingly can do no wrong with the judges, performing "September" from Earth, Wind and Fire, and Allison Iraheta powering through Donna Summer’s "Hot Stuff." Rounding out the night was the heavily favored rocker, Adam Lambert, doing a tender reinterpretation of Yvonne Elliman’s "If I Can't Have You," and the “saved” singer Matt Giraud performing “Stayin’ Alive” by the BeeGees. Yet again, American Idol ® front-runner Adam Lambert gave an astonishing performance, this time of the Tears for Fears classic "Mad World." Other stand-outs last night were the soulful Matt Giraud performing Steve Wonder’s “Part Time Lover” and Allison Iraheta with Bonnie Raitt’s "I Can't Make You Love Me." The stars were out last night for the Academy of Country Music Awards. Everyone's favorite country girl, Carrie Underwood, went home with the Entertainer of the Year statue. Album of the Year went to Taylor Swift for her album Fearless, and Single Record of the Year to Trace Adkins for "You’re Gonna Miss This." American Idol fan sites and message boards are gaga today over the one and only Lady GaGa, with her smoking performance on last night's American Idol results show. Although our lovely A.I. favorite, Megan Joy, was cast-off after a shaky performance of Bob Marley’s “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” Lady GaGa brought the house down with her flamboyant, artistic performance. Belting out her #1 hit “Poker Face,” Lady GaGa began the show demurely playing her glass piano filled with bubbles, then busted into an outer space-themed dance number to the delight of the crowd. Widely known in the dance club circuit and performance art circles, Lady GaGa first took the charts by the horns last year with her #1 hit "Just Dance." She is among a rare group of artists, along with powerhouses Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera, whose first two singles reached the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. Pussycat Dolls Team with Slumdog Millionaire Composer
In anticipation of tomorrow's DVD release of Slumdog Millionaire, this year's Best Picture winner at the Oscars®, the Pussycat Dolls have released their own spicy version of the award winning song “Jai Ho!
