The retro-inspired duo has taken cues from rock gods Buddy Holly, The Velvet Underground and other diverse influencers to create their unique sound.
The Raveonettes 2007 LP Lust, Lust, Lust earned rave reviews for its innovative, ethereal guitar sounds interwoven with an infectious hybrid beat of New Wave, Punk and Pop. The album produced several popular songs, including “Dead Sound,” You Want The Candy,” “Aly, Walk With Me,” and “Blush” (along with the amazing B-side “Black-White”). Their follow-up record, the EP Sometimes They Drop By, explored a new dimension of their vintage stylings, combining the cinematic ambience of composers like Angelo Badalamenti, and guitar riffs also found in the work of current guitar aficionado M. Ward.

From Kanye West's disruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech, to Lady GaGa's shocking, horror-themed performance, the MTV Video Music Awards fulfilled its promise to be the most buzz-worthy awards show of the year. The night’s excitement, MC'd by Wale, was topped off with tons of memorable live performances from Beyonce, Pink, Pitbull, Muse, 3OH!3, The All-American Rejects, and an encore by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.
More excitement ensued when Lady GaGa appeared to be injured during her elaborate dance sequence for her hit “Paparazzi.” In fact, it was all part of the dramatic, gory performance which morphed into horror movie madness, interpreted by some as an homage to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" and Madonna’s famous 1980’s MTV VMA performance of “Like A Virgin.”
The Fab Four are grabbing headlines this week with the hotly anticipated re-release of their entire catalog, along with The Beatles™: Rock Band™ game. Tomorrow's music release, a complete set of re-mastered recordings, will not be available through internet MP3 retailers, which make The Beatles one of the last hold-outs currently unwilling to sell their music in digital form.
However, music fans have a reason to be hopeful: the solo recordings of John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr are all sold through digital music outlets. Internet stirrings also indicate that the legends may ultimately go digital with their own official music sales website.

Guitar innovator and general rock god, Les Paul, passed away today at the very-rocking age of 94. Just last year, Paul was awarded the prestigious "American Music Masters" award from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in the company of other music greats, such as Janis Joplin and Jerry Lee Lewis. A true innovator of guitar design, Les Paul’s famous instruments have been played by countless musicians, among them Slash, of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver fame, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, and Eric Clapton, who is credited with the resurgence of Les Paul’s legendary Gibson guitar design.
Fun fact! Les Paul was godfather to funky jam-rock superstar Steve Miller. In addition to our full Les Paul catalog, Thumbplay has several wonderful little nuggets of Les Paul greatness – check them out!
The Woodstock music festival of 1969 celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend. The 3-day music festival, which began on August 15, 1969, is remembered as the quintessential statement of peace through music, and has gone on to define the countercultural crossroads of an entire generation.
Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler took a tumble from the stage at last night's South Dakota show. The dynamic singer was starting their 90's hit “Love In An Elevator” when he missed a step and fell into the crowd. Aerosmith is currently on the road in anticipation of their astonishing 15th album, to be released later this year. Special guests ZZ Top are featured on the tour as well.
The season of star-studded outdoor festivals is upon us, with the biggest artists playing this past weekend at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The festival's opening night on Friday brought out the big guns with headliner Jay-Z, whose new single “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” has taken over the charts. Jay-Z, who was a last minute replacement for the The Beastie Boys, was joined by Vampire Weekend, Q-Tip, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, currently on fire with their new single “Heads Will Roll.”
Saturday’s line-up included rockers My Bloody Valentine, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, and alt-country phenom Neko Case, who has enjoyed a flourishing solo career after her time with Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers. Sunday’s show ended the festival with a bang – superstars Coldplay headlined the night, supported by MGMT, Mogwai, The Black Keys, and 80’s new wave gods Echo & The Bunnymen.

The good-humored Bret Michaels laughed off Monday's awards show incident that nearly left him with a broken nose. The tough guy rocker took a blow to the head after Poison's performance of their 80's hit "Nothin' But a Good Time" at this week's awards gala, honoring the theater world's best and brightest. As the star of VH1’s “Rock of Love,” Michaels is usually floored by a bevy of ladies, not the scenery! Check out Thumbplay’s huge catalog of Bret MichaelsMP3’s and tones, plus Poison’s classic library of MP3’s, ringtones and videos. Last night's show was hotter than it has been all season, with the final three guys performing two songs each. The first round songs were "Judges Choice," kicking off with Danny Gokey singing Paula's pick, a rambunctious version of Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Dance Little Sister,” to mixed praise by the judges. Next up was a surprising and original performance by Kris Allen, of OneRepublic’s “Apologize,” chosen by Kara and Randy. Simon stuck with the classics, hand-picking U2’s “One” for Adam, whose arrangement of the song rubbed Randy the wrong way.
The half-way mark brought in old favorite, season four winner Carrie Underwood, showing her charitable side in the annual “Idol Gives Back®” segment, to the tune of Karl Wolf’s “Africa,” a cover of the 1983 Toto hit. Round two started with Danny’s "You Are So Beautiful" made famous by Joe Cocker. Was it enough to keep Danny alive? He has some stiff competition from Kris, whose unique cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless” brought the house down. Simon pleaded with viewers to vote for Adam, who chose "Cryin’" by Aerosmith as his final song.
Find past Idol® winners on the “America’s Favorites” page, and make sure to check out the great original versions of last night’s performances here at Thumbplay.

The original recording of Pearl Jam's timeless 1991 album Ten has been entirely remastered and re-released with several extra tracks. The reissued album includes the lost Pearl Jam song “Brother,” just hit #1 on the Modern Rock charts. Fun Pearl Jam trivia: “Brother” was an outtake from the original recording session of Ten, but was only released for the first time on the 2003 album Lost Dogs; however, that version was only instrumental. The new, remastered edition of Ten is the first time “Brother” has been released as the original recording with vocals. Check out other classic Pearl Jam songs in the Thumbplay ringtone catalogue, including the unforgettable “Even Flow,”“Alive,”“Jeremy,” and “Black.”

Emo newbie Secondhand Serenade melts teen hearts with his newest single "Fall For You". This California band is one man, created by John Vesely in 2004. Secondhand Serenade is a solo acoustic rock project, with a solid myspace following. The 2007 album Awake put Secondhand Serenade on the map, but not until 2008's A Twist In My Story, did John Vesely find mainstream success.
Rock band Slipknot creates haunting artwork to go along with their music. The band also performs in masks. They created new masks for all nine band members in July, described as "creepy" and "intricate." Slipknot reportedly rarely cleans their masks, despite the band's claims that they bleed, sweat and vomit into them during concerts. Awesome?!
Slipknot fans will enjoy Thumbplay's selection of new artwork from the album "All Hope Is Gone," which display a gothic characters with or without Slipknot's logo.
If Motley Crue made you "Feelgood" in the 80s, you're in luck, because these rockers are actually back again. This time, their single is called "Saints of Los Angeles" off of their new album "Saints of Los Angeles." They sound pretty much the same in all of their energetic hair band glory. Glad they returned to share their talents with the current generation ...

Alt-rock favorites Pearl Jam are coming back with a massive tour this year, and tickets are on sale now. Playing massive venues like Madison Square Garden, Pearl Jam proves that people are still excited by their music. Pearl Jam helped popularize the grunge movement of the early 1990s, and they are one of the only mainstream 90s grunge bands that is still active.
Bonus fact, Matt Cameron, drummer for Pearl Jam, used to be in Soundgarden.
